CAST is a project that offers services across the county of Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire. We work with all young people aged 13 to 19 and uses angling, Land Based Studies, conservation and construction with lots of practical hands on learning to achieve purposeful outcomes for young people.
The courses includes a range of subjects within the Land Based Studies portfolio including fishing and fishery management, health and safety at work, use and maintenance of equipment and various landscaping elements. Each day starts with a classroom session followed by a lengthy practical session to embed learning. All units and qualifications are delivered around practical pieces of project work to support learning and engagement, for example, the unit Using workshop tools in a land-based setting will see learners learn how to use tools and equipment safely, including correct manual handling techniques.
The course has an element of flexibility within the structure to allow for student needs. To this end, we revise and adapt the course in terms of unit selection and content each year to suit our current cohort of young people.
Qualifications/Outcomes
Students have the opportunity to undertake a BTEC qualification during their time with CAST. This could be Unit Accreditation through to a Level 1 Diploma depending on how long students stay at this provision and engage with the sessions.
BTEC Level 1 Award in Land Based Studies
BTEC Level 1 Certificate in Land Based Studies
BTEC Level 1 Diploma in Land Based Studies
What Should I Wear?
Angling and Land Management sessions with CAST predominantly take place outside. The weather can be unpredictable so we recommend wearing clothing that will ensure that you are comfortable during your time at provision.
In the Winter months, we strongly recommend a warm, waterproof coat, boots, gloves, a hat and an extra pair of socks. In the Summer months we would advise bringing a sun hat, and a waterproof coat, just in case.
